The back lever is one of the first advanced skill moves in calisthenics training. The body is hanging in in parallel position to the ground while the face looks downwards. This exercise needs a lot of shoulder strength and mobility. The core and legs are tighten to keep the body in a straight line.


Before training back lever exercises like skin the cat or german hang should be no problem. To master the final move there are some training progression with decreased lever (tucked legs or straddle legs).

Preparation Exercises

Correct execution

  • Shoulder are protracted to stablize straight position
  • Tip hips back to prevent hollow back position
  • Keep legs and butt under tension
